How I can be of service to you

WHO is this for?

I created The Grief Lyceum™ over the past few years after the deaths of both of my parents and beloved best friend. I designed it to help grievers and those who love them to understand their grief experiences so they can move from pain to peace.

WHY The Grief Lyceum™?

I developed The Grief Lyceum™ because my own experiences with grief left me isolated, confused, numb, and wondering if I quite legitimately was losing my mind. While I eventually found support through various community resources and therapy, the missing piece was understanding WHY I had brain fog, irritability, sleeplessness, numbness, and so many other physical and emotional symptoms that I knew from my mental health career were trauma responses. What I wish I knew then was that my mind and body responded to an inevitable situation (a death or loss), in the only way it knew how.

Once I understood the core principles I lay out in The Grief Lyceum™, I was able to navigate my grief from a place of power and acceptance, instead of resisting the inevitable reality of the loss.  With the charged political and economical climate, people from all walks of life are experiencing various losses in unimaginable ways today, and The Grief Lyceum™ seeks to educate and inform in order to help grievers navigate even the most complex and challenging times. If you want to have acceptance and understanding about your grief without the confusing and paralyzing overwhelm, be sure to join us in The Grief Lyceum™!

FAQ

Question: Is the The Grief Lyceum™ therapy?

Answer: No. The Grief Lyceum™ is a community of people who have experienced grief and wish to learn about grief, its impact on our social, emotional, and professional life, ways to navigate grief, and resources for deeper learning. The Grief Lyceum™ is not a substitute for mental health care, and all participants are encouraged to seek outside mental health support if needed. It is, however, an opportunity to learn about the Seasons of Grief, the way the body and brain experience grief as trauma, as well as somatic and mindful practices to help you navigate the many ways grief will appear in your life over time.

Question: Does The Grief Lyceum™ cure grief?

Answer: No. There is no "cure" for grief. Grief is ever-changing, can be complex, and is as unique as the individual experiencing it. The intention of The Grief Lyceum™ is to help grievers understand the many facets of their grief, how their brain and body responds to the grief event, in order to be more self-aware. What you learn in this program is not meant to eliminate grief (that's impossible!), but to provide you a safe space to explore it, create a healthy and honest relationship with it, in order to increase your self-awareness.  In other words, you will likely still experience the pangs and waves of your loss, but the difference is, you will be able to name it, know where it is coming from, what's happening in your body at the time, and have tools to ride the wave until you're calm and back to your baseline.

Question: Does The Grief Lyceum™ only explore grief if someone died?

Answer: Absolutely not! One of the things you will learn in the program is the various causes of grief from loss of employment, loss of a relationship, medical challenges, life transitions such as career, empty nest, or graduating from school, loss of a pet or animal companion, and change in social or financial status, just to name a few. All grief is welcome 🙂

Question: What age do I have to be to take The Grief Lyceum™
Answer: The Grief Lyceum™ is an online program for adults approximately 18 years old and older who have experienced a loss or grief of some kind.

Question: Are students required to turn in “homework” for a “grade”?
Answer: No. Any assignments, activities, or homework, including journal or readings, are purely for your enrichment. While you will be part of monthly calls if you wish, the experience and work you will be doing is highly personal, and therefore, private. Students will not be asked to submit work, share work, and no grades at all will be given. Students are encouraged to share any epiphanies, growth, or new perspectives gleaned from the course with your Grief Guide Christina, but it is not at all a requirement.

Question: My loved one just died/I was just diagnosed with a serious illness/lost my job a few days ago. Is it a good time to take this course?
Answer: We are so sorry for your loss, and hope you have the support you need to cope with the many opportunities for growth, challenges, and experiences the loss will present to you. While there is no set time limit regarding when someone is “ready” to engage in The Grief Lyceum™, it’s important that each person reflects on their capacity to learn and actively participate with the modules and activities. The when is a highly personal choice, and you are encouraged to discuss all support options with any mental health professionals at your disposal if you have had a recent death or source of grief.

Question: Do you provide refunds?
Answer: No. We do not provide refunds under any circumstances. As this is a self-paced course, if for example, you purchase today and an emergency occurs, you have lifetime access to the material and when you’re better able to focus on the grief work at hand, whether in a few days, months, or even years, you can simply begin at that time.

Our Core Values

1

Trust

We believe that once people have the right tools, they are the experts in their own grief. We trust learners to know themselves and once they know themselves, they can trust their intuition, trust in being able to identify what they need and how to seek support

2

Evolution

Grief isn’t something to “get over”—it shapes us, molds us, and changes who we are. We embrace grief as a radical evolution of self.

4

Agency

We believe that those who grieve deserve autonomy over their own healing journey. While we provide education, resources, and support, we never impose a “right” way to grieve.

3

Compassionate Curiosity

We approach grief with an open mind and heart, always seeking to learn rather than assume. We recognize that grief is deeply personal, and instead of offering quick fixes, we ask questions, listen deeply, and remain open to different ways people experience and express loss.

Upcoming In-person Event!

Join Carla Fernandez (Co-founder of The Dinner Party and author of Renegade Grief) and co-host Dr. Christina at world-renown yoga and health center, Kripalu, this summer for their weekend retreat, Renegade Grief: Navigating Life and Loss.

The offering:

Grieving in a culture that denies death is a radical, courageous, and necessary act. Join Carla Fernandez—author of Renegade Grief and cofounder of the nationwide peer-support community The Dinner Party—and Dr. Christina Semple, death doula and grief guide, for a weekend retreat dedicated to tending grief through creativity, care, and connection.

Together, we’ll explore how grief is not just something we feel—it’s something we do. When we give it our attention, grief becomes a living, active force that brings meaning, movement, and deeper connection into our lives. Carla and Christina will gently guide you through a social-emotional journey grounded in art, play, reflection, and somatic practices.

Over the course of this weekend, you will:

  • Learn how grief impacts us and how to normalize its many forms

  • Discover the healing role of peer-support in navigating loss

  • Experience creative, embodied practices for tending grief

  • Build a personalized grief self-care plan

  • Connect with a supportive community of fellow grievers

Through guided conversation, journaling, altar building, letter writing, and other soul-nourishing rituals, we’ll co-create a space of healing, inspiration, and collective care. Whether your loss is recent or decades old, all are welcome.

Note: Program activities are drawn from the 20+ care practices featured in Renegade Grief.
